Nervous as we awaited what would come next and anxious as we all began our journey, the class sat quiet. Our teachers Sheryl and Amanty quickly brought the life into the room. In an instant I knew this class was going to be awesome. They have such passion and excitement for the job they do that I am sure it will spread to each and every one of us. In the first class we learned a brief history of dentistry, the anatomy of the mouth, and who would of thought...the correct way to number and refer to the teeth. They wouldn't be just canine teeth or vampire teeth to us any more. We also covered charting and how to mark the teeth depending on what was wrong with them. It is going to take a lot of work getting familiar with all of the new vocabulary and terms but I have no doubt that with the help of the upcoming lab, we will be able to pick things up more quickly with practice.

Crossing the Halfway Point

Saturday December 17th

Today was FRIENDS AND FAMILY DAY!!! It was so fun to meet the friends and family members of all the students in the class, and be able to practice our skills on someone other than a dental assistant student. It showed me that I have a lot to work on and will need lots of practice before I am comfortable working in a dental office. I think we are all a little nervous for the externships, but they will probably be a great experience that will show us what we need to practice on. We had a holiday party and can't wait to come back to class on December 27th! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

Thursday December 15th

Tonight we took impressions so that each of us will be able to make our own bleach trays. Taking impressions for bleach trays is a little different because when you pour the models the base is much smaller and almost non-existant. Also, when you trim the models for bleach trays, the models are trimmed down to almost nothing before they are put in the machine that forms the bleach trays.

Saturday December 10th

I definitely need to practice taking impressions, pouring models, and trimming models. In addition to practicing impressions, we did re-takes of the x-rays on eachother so we could each grade our FMX. I had to re-take 3 of mine. I was also able to practice sealants one more time.

Saturday December 3rd

As we returned to class after a great Thanskgiving break, we had our mid-term exam! We had a written exam and a practical exam in which we identified instruments used in the dental office. We are a little more comfortable with what we have learned, but it will take time and practice for us to really master those skills.

Learning x-rays

Saturday November 19th, 2011

Today we continued x-rays. We did an FMX (full mouth series) on our partners. The anterior and posterior teeth were much more difficult to x-ray than the bite wing x-rays. I definitely do not feel comfortable using the x-rays because it is very difficult to place in the patient's mouth. After developing the x-rays, most of us found that we are going to have to re-do our x-rays. We are allowed to perform to FMX each before we are exposed to too much radiation in such a short time. Next week we do not have class, but HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

Stephani

8 posts by current student blogger

Saturday October 22nd, 2011

Today was our first day of class and it was so fun to meet all of the teachers and all the students!!! All of us women are going to have so much fun getting to know each other and learning how to be amazing dental assistants! It was very exciting to finally find out exactly what the next 12 weeks are going to be like!!! Today we went over the basics of the mouth: the different surfaces of teeth, the numbering of teeth, and an introduction to charting. This will definitely be the foundation for the next 12 weeks and I can’t wait to learn more!

Thursday October 27th, 2011

Tonight was our first Thursday night class, and I am so excited for labs each week!!! We were able to use a mouth mirror and observe the teeth of our partner! Then the 3rd member of our group recorded all of the information on the patient’s chart. It was so fun to act out the roles of the dentist, the dental assistant, and the patient. We didn't really know what we were doing but we will learn in time as we get more comfortable.

Saturday October 29th, 2011

We got to practice a child prophy on our partner! I did not realize how nervous I would be to sit in the dentist’s chair and use all of the instruments for a cleaning! I think I speak for everyone when I say that brushing another person’s teeth is much more difficult than brushing your own! I am not sure what the proper technique for a child prophy is but we are seeing what is comfortable. We also got to experience the important role of cleaning for dental assistants….no wonder dental offices are always so clean! Dental offices are lucky to have us to make sure that everything is super shiny and looks nice for all the patients! I definitely am going to need to practice brushing on some of my friends and family!

Thursday November 3rd, 2011

We are learning about the human body and OSHA standards in a dental office. I can’t wait to apply this knowledge on the job. When I was younger I used to have to get impressions at the dentist and the orthodontist…and I hated it!! Little did I know I would let other people give me more impressions as an adult just for practice! Even though it is very fun to pour the alginate into the tray and take the impression of a patient’s mouth, it sure does not taste very good for the patient! It was so fun to look at our impressions and be able to identify all of our teeth and even some of our amalgams and composites. The best part was being able to take our impressions home and put them in the refrigerator. I can’t wait to bring them back on Saturday when we will actually get to pour our impressions!

Saturday November 5th, 2011

After we took our test (the 2nd one we have taken so far) and went over all of our homework (the 2nd group of homework assignments that we have had so far), it was time to start the lab! I learned how to pour impressions and it is much more difficult than I thought it would be! I definitely made too much of my impression, so when we mold them next Thursday I will definitely have a lot to shave off! Then after we cleaned up our mess, we were able to practice a child prophy again. I felt a little better the 2nd time. The flossing part is still the hardest, I am not sure what form we should use, but we will probably get more comfortable over time. The diclosing tablet still shows lots of pink, but practice makes perfect!!!

Thursday November 10th, 2011

I was finally able to complete my impressions! I trimmed the models, and it was much more difficult than I ever thought it would be. So, I think I can speak for everyone when I say that I am very happy that we are not being graded on our first impression model. I was a little frustrated that my model did not turn out exactly like it should have, but that is motivating me to practice impressions more during lab time. Since it is too dangerous to practice on each other, and we are all probably too old to put sealants on our teeth, we practiced on models. It is really fun to do sealants, but I am not sure exactly what that is going to look like on a real patient and if dental assistants can even perform sealants. Friends and Family Day is next month so that means we should all practice those new skills during lab time so that we can be our best when we bring in our friends and family members as our very first patients!

Saturday November 12th, 2011

We talked a little bit about x-rays and we are starting to learn our strengths and weaknesses in the lab. Personally, my weakness is impressions, so that is something that I will have to practice more. Today we introduced the set-up of rubber dams and passing instruments, two things that I personally found very challenging! I have no idea what this will actually look like on a patient, but tried to put the rubber dam together on its own once. But I know that with practice all of these skills will become second nature. I can’t wait to learn about x-rays next week!

Thursday November 17th, 2011

Tonight we each got to take 4 x-rays of our partner and develop the film! When I was in high school I took a photography class and the developing process in the dark room reminded me so much of my photography class! Except with the automatic processing machine it was much easier and faster to develop our “pictures” than the manual process that I used in high school for my pictures. It was really fun to mount our x-rays and look at them afterwards. I can’t wait to finish the full-mouth series on Saturday!

We are off to a great start with 4 new sessions starting in Broomfield, Denver and Grand Junction. Our new students are eager to learn and get prepared for their new careers in dental assisting. Dental assisting is still a top-rated career for job openings according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, with a 36% expected job growth rate through 2018, which is said to be "excellent."

According to Amady, Admissions Director and Career Counselor, graduates actively looking for dental assistant openings are having no trouble getting hired. Good news!

Monday, August 15, 2011

We're briskly approaching week three, it's amazing how much information we've already learned in such a short time. So far we've learned: how to chart, dental terms, how to prophy and adequately take impressions. It sounds like a lot of work but that's because it is. Luckily the instructors and classmates make it quite enjoyable, more like a social gathering where you learn things other than a school that slowly ticks by. I'm almost shocked at how much I look forward to class each week, it feels like all of the classmates and professors have bonded and that makes the classes a lot of fun.

I'm already looking forward to Friends and Family week to show off my new skills.

Cash

Almost the End of the Road...

I cant believe that its almost that time-
We are all getting our externships ready, finishing up or last hand full of classes, and getting ready for friends and family day! In Sunday's Lab we got to polish each others teeth! Learning how to hold the instruments, use the instruments while holding them, and polishing teeth(all sides) was definitely an adventure! Although some of us finished faster than others- we all enjoyed doing this..even if it was kind of nerve racking the first couple of teeth..
Thursday Night:
Rubber Dams.....enough said...haha....we also went over our homework. We watched a video and I personally took alot of notes about rubber dams..just because I would like them for the future..but, it was really easy to learn about them..getting them on...now that seems to be a little more challenging!

All in all..I am sooo happy to be in this class and to have chosen this school. My teachers are so fun and they really make learning enjoyable(wish I would of had them threw high school..hehehe). They already have taught me alot about the dental community and I am so excited to get out there and work! Teeth are all I seem to notice about people now when I first seem them..I am even dreaming about my wisdom teeth being pulled out during class! hahaha..

SEE YOU ALL ON THURSDAY NIGHT!!!
dont forget we have Chapters 9,10,17,18 due and of course another quiz on Sunday!!!

DID YOU KNOW?
WHEN YOU HAVE A CARBOHYDRATE IN YOUR MOUTH IT RAISES YOUR ACIDIC LEVEL? ...AND THAT EDGES YOUR TEETH!?....another reason why I have to stay away from carbs........GREAT! :(

WHAT A WEEK!!!

This has been an awesome week!

Thursday night we got to get to know eachother up close and personal even if we dont know eachothers names yet..we got to know their mouths! The night went by really fast and before I knew it I was begging my boyfriend to let me chart his! We went over homework and went over alot of information that we were told "may be on the quiz"..we also got to wipe down the areas where we practiced and got to know our area.
Sunday has been the funniest so far..at least for me. The biggest quote of the day was.."I don't want you to be perfect today, I want you to make a mess..It means that you are actually learning"..COULDN'T OF BEEN MORE TRUE!!.. We got to make empressions of our partners arches and of course they got to it back. Personally I was a little nervous about having my top empression done, because I was afraid of gagging..a little silly yes, but it turned out it really wasnt that bad. The instructors were awesome and helped me out with everything I needed to know. I am very impressed with CSDA I am glad that I went here rather than a longer program. The program worked out well with my schedule being a single mom. I am looking forward to getting involved in the dental community. Thank you CSDA for everything you have helped me become. By helping improving patients’ oral health, Dental Assistants play an important role in helping people feel better about themselves. And, because each patient is different, dental assisting offers endless variety of experiences from day to day, keeping everyday as exciting as the last.

Training For a Career in Dental Assisting:

Whether embarking on a second career, or looking for a reliable, recession-proof first career, seeking workforce education rather than college can be more rewarding in the long run. The skills learned at 1 or 2-year dental assisting programs can be out of touch with what is necessary to get a job as a dental assistant. A dental assisting program that is accelerated and hands-on, such as at the CSDA with its 12-week session and 12 hours per week of class time, is an affordable alternative to a degree granting program, with tuition much more competitively priced at under $3000, and offering the same starting salary.

“I didn’t realize how fulfilling a career in dental assisting would be,” said Jessica Marshman, a recent CSDA graduate who accepted a position with a Denver dentist weeks after receiving her certification. “Aside from the benefits of full-time employment, I have the greatest job in the world: helping people smile.”

The next session begins April 30, 2011 and May 1, 2011 for Saturday and Sunday classes respectively.

Week 8 already :)

The mid-term went perfect 100% on both the written and practical!!! Assisting skills like suctioning with the HVE, passing instruments (goodness so many to know), mixing bases, liners, cements, assisting with the amalgam and composite restorations, placing of matrix bands, bleaching trays, and much more. Next week is crown and bridges, we get to learn how to do a temporary! So excited for this as well as friends and family day :) This is the time we get to show off our skills! We are celebrating the 10th Year Anniversary with a Homecoming Reunion on April 8, 2011. The Reunion is for all past students/alumni. We will be serving drinks and appetizers and hope many of you can make it to share your experience thus far with former classmates. Unfortunately, we only have room for 100 people. Past students should be receiving invites online from Pingg.com. If you are a past student and did not receive an invitation, and would like to attend, call Amady at 800-383-3408. The course has been approved by the Colorado Board of Education, and will start this Spring, 2011. The EDDA course will consist of 4 Saturdays at our Broomfield location, and will cover placing permanent restorations, sealants, final impressions and provisional restorations. I came into this not expecting to meet such great women and learn so much. Monica, Katie and Shari, have been wonderful and not only were able to teach me the essentials of dental assisting, but so much more. Having these 3 women with 3 different dental backgrounds has brought a knowledge that surpassed my expectations. Katie taught us tricks ie.. to get good x-rays and help with patient comfort use their tongue as a cushion. I got a 99% on my fmx! Monica, has taught me more than any book ever could. I have my externship scheduled, I am so excited to go into the office. Thank you guys for all that you have given me, knowledge and confidence.

Lanie

It is the second week in Grand Junction and we have already learned so much. Without them, we would undoubtably be lost in the realm of dental work!

Fort Collins Class

The Fort Collins class is always so much much fun! We love you and look forward to our next dance!!!!!
-Mindy McCombs-

Time Keeps Flying By!

Another week has come and gone. The past two weeks have been all about x-rays, sealants, fluoride treatments, and polishing. We took FMX (full mouth x-rays) and developed them, and also we did BWX (bite wing x-rays). I enjoyed taking the x-rays and then seeing the final product once they were developed. Sunday we learned how to polish teeth, do fluoride treatments, and place sealants. Getting used to holding the instruments correctly was a bit awkward at first, but by the end I felt comfortable knowing what I was doing. As always Connie and Caidee were helpful with everything!

This week we will be learning how to do composites and amalgams!

-Emilee

(I have some pictures that I will try and get put up soon!)

Bleach Trays WOOO!

Today in class we made bleach trays. Let me start by saying that I am very impressed by the character of Monica, Katie and Ben. In the short time we have been here, we have had lots of laughs and even more knowledge gained.
I have always been one to notice people's smiles, but now even more so. I must say that I am very proud to be a part of Dentistry, or when I fully become a part of it, I will be proud. Because what is better than helping people take care of their smiles? After all, a smile is what gives us our health and confidence, and our smiles last a lifetime.

-Mindy McCombs-

ADMIN

WANT A CAREER START HERE/ WE HAVE THE BEST INSTRUCTORS YOU CAN FIND
A DENTAL ASSISTING SCHOOL IS NO BETTER THAN THE INSTRUCTORS WHO ARE TEACHING THE PROGRAM / INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE TODAY AND FOR TOMORROW

CSDA Denver Location!! week 3

Week 3 Preventative Dentistry, Alginate Impressions and Sealants.

Weeks after week, students at CSDA are keeping the momentum, studying hard and attending classes regularly. We all love our instructors (Monica and Kattie).

Preventative dentistry is a subject that students show what has gone right and wrong in the pass in our own tooth anatomy. Knowing from what we've learn from this chapters, made us to be aware of things we can do to achieve and maintain an optimum oral health for a life time.
Identifying the types of Dental diseases, their formation and how to care about these disease is very fascinating. Brushing, mouth rinsing, and flossing methodologies was an interesting exercises for students, hence its a daily routine for us like many others, knowing a better way to perform this task is great. Nutritional education is a key component in maintaining a good oral health and we are glad to know key ingredients that makes a good oral health.

The lab work for preventative dentistry was techniques of brushing, flossing, and tropical fluoride Gel or foam application .

Part of week three lectures was on Coronal polishing , fluoride, prophylaxis, sealants, and stains of teeth.

The lab works for these chapters was on Coronal polishing, Alginate impressions, sealants placement, rinsing and suctioning. Students have fun to do practice coronal polishing and to have a free polishing, free fluoride application. Thanks to the generosity of CSDA management. Below are pictures and videos from the lab exercises.

Author
Mustapha Hydara
CSDA Student.

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; I'd do it again!!!

Colorado School of Dental Assisting (CSDA) was one of my greatest opportunities to fulfill my passion for dentistry. Within the accelerated program I was able to connect on a one on one basis with my instructors which helped tremendously with any questions or concerns I had. The instructors made class fun and interesting. Once the students learned most of the labs we collaborated together and helped each other with each project. We were also given the opportunity to have a hands on experience with all the instruments and get a feel for what it truly would be like working in a dental office. From my experience while attending CSDA I was excited to attend class every day and see what was next on the agenda. The instructors made it fun to learn about dentistry and made sure everyone was on the same page before moving forward. CSDA was definitely a great experience and if I could do it all over again I would. Who knows... maybe I'll just register again because it was so much fun!

Student
Shala Parker

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://schoolofdentalassisting.blogspot.com/2009/11/if-i-could-id-do-it-again.html' title='If I could... Well this is my first time to write on this. I am pretty excited since I love to talk. I will start off that we are the first class at the NSDA School in Plano, TX and we all love it. It has been a new beginning for all of us. From the time we walked in that door and knew nothing to the time now where we are talking about Oral Maxillary Surgey, we all feel so smart ( haha ). I have had a time of my life in this program , all the new material we learn to all the great people and instructors we have met. I have made some amazing friends.

We are almost getting closer and closer to our State RDA Test and it is so nerve-racking. We have formed a study group among the girls in the class, so I am sure we will all be studying super hard, the next few weeks!!! On Sunday we were doing mouth impressions and labs like crazy, it really feels like a true work day on lab days, so my job is going to be lots of fun, I am EXCITED!

Also our class has to start looking for externships :) exciting ? It is confusing where to start, but i think we will all do great!!!

Until Next Week :)

-MaRanda (Plano,TX)

We're back up

Sorry folks. It is incredible beyond words. Every patient is different, every case is different, I am in there hands-on and working side-by-side with some wonderful people that are patient and helpful. It was challenging and practical and, thanks to our terrific instructors, gave me more confidence heading into the second half of our education and training. One-on-ones were also appreciated, giving not only the students but also the instructors, a chance to discuss strengths, opportunities, concerns, and compliments. It is obvious that CSDA really cares about each student and their success!

Enough of the "mushy" stuff though--we don't have time! Here we go, right into restorative dental assisting. We'll be learning about the procedures for composite and amalgam fillings, and work our way into bridges and crowns. If you enjoy labwork as much as I do, these next few weeks you will be showing up early to class! Lectures and notetaking are going to be important still, so keep those ears open and your pencil ready to jot down those jewels of wisdom. We have learned about medical emergencies, anesthesia, and how to prepare an aspirating syringe. We have also completed all lab work and are ready for week six--the mid-term exam! This will not be for the faint of heart, folks. The questions will cover everything that we have learned so far, from terminology to instrument recognition, and charting to procedure and setup. Don't worry, we've been trained to ace this test! Your notes and all previous tests are your study materials, but don't forget you have classmates and instructors to help you through any questions you may have.

Our graduation is nearing quickly, so remember you must have an externship of at least eight hours in order to complete your requirements. Some of you have already found where this will take place--congratulations! Some of you may still be unsure of where to look--don't worry, here are some places you can look online:

Colorado Dental Association
Angieslist
Craigslist
DentalJobs.com
Metro Denver Dental Association

Also, you can talk to your current dentist. This past week we have been learning radiology--and as you all know, this is a very important skill to master. FMX's, PID's, processing... CSDA is committed to making certain that we have this knowledge, and know it forward and back!

I do have one question for anyone out there that may know... How do you keep a patient from gagging? Seems a silly question with a simple enough answer. But when doing xrays, there's a good chance of hitting that reflex "button". And have you ever been to the dentist, had your mouth wide open while he works, and you are to breathe only through your nose the entire time? Try it... it's not easy! So let me know if you have the answer (because I don't see it in the book, my friend!)

Okay, there is another test coming up so prepare for that. Keep in mind, though, the mid-term exam is the following week!! So gather all your reviews and homework, previous tests, flash cards, class notes, and anything else you have and start studying as soon as you can for it. There is also a practice test in the back of your textbook, although it is covering more than we have learned yet, find the questions that you do know and answer those. Good luck and have a good week!

Carla Jordan

Denver South Class (Sun/Tues)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 114px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_lZYE2PsY1-M/Shw8SlaOJUI/AAAAAAAAAEU/MgFjSvYjLZY/s200/IMG_2049.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340209548131968322" />

Everyone is welcome to post a class photo too!

Week Three

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 125px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lZYE2PsY1-M/Shw7LAI629I/AAAAAAAAAEM/QkQQw7gyKfo/s200/collage.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340208318356577234" />

Okay everyone! Week three has brought on alot of information and hands-on lab work. I don't know about you, but I am having a blast with every bit of it! This week we learned about coronal polishings and flouride treatments, rubber dams, impressions and how to take them, how to make casts and houses for them, and also about sealants. Wow! Be proud of yourselves, because that is quite a bit and we've sailed through beautifully. And thank your instructors for all that they do--they are wonderful!

This week's homework and reviews are from Chapters 9, 10, 17, and 18. This week we learned the essentials of dental assisting, infection control, sterilizing, coronal polishing and rubber dams. Oh, but that's not all! We have more terminology under our belts like pathogen, cariogenic, prophylaxis, and extrinsic. Ah, but the best part that everyone seems to enjoy is the hands-on lab work! It's quite satisfying to put our book knowledge to use on our assigned partner, or to be split into a group and help each other with a procedure or assignment.

Okay, just to review... Homework is due next class and there will be a small quiz again on Chapters 5,6,7,and 8. If you're not sure on something, pull out your instructor/student phone list and give someone a call! This blog is for everyone–new students, current students, former students, instructors, faculty, and anyone that may just be thinking of joining. Any and all feedback is welcome, including advice, ideas, job possibilities, homework help, and comments. Let’s get some basics started and review what has transpired in this last week at CSDA.
The dental assistant field must be booming and in great need, because CSDA has full classes running on both Saturday/Thursday and Sunday/Tuesday. Students donned their scrubs and comfortable shoes, with paper and pencils in hand, and were welcomed with smiles and donuts. Introductions were made around the room and, no doubt, many similarities linked each to another in some way. This is an accelerated course and there was anxious anticipation in the room to get started, so off we go!
We began with learning our dentistry forefathers (and mothers), touching on ethics, covering the members of our dental health team, and identifying our dental specialties. This was a great way to warm us up and to get comfortable with our instructors’ teaching styles. Then we go directly to the core reason why we enrolled... the tooth! Wow, who knew there was so much to learn about that little piece of bone? We have a new language to learn now, like periodontal ligament and interproximal, but that was to be expected. It will be exciting to know what your dentist is talking about when he tells his assistant that you have DL decay or an abcess that needs RCT and FGC (although, we certainly don’t want to hear that!). Admit it, everyone wants to be apart of a special club that has its own language.
When we returned on our second day, we learned about charting. The instructors have assured us that we will be charting in our sleep by the time they are done with us, but this is a good thing concerning our future in this field. We now know how many teeth are in our mouth, the names of our teeth, we understand distal, lingual, buccal, mesial, posterior and anterior, and abbreviations for all this and more. Soon, we will be asking family members to lean back in the recliner and say "aaaahh!" just so that we can show off our impressive knowledge and terminology.
There will be a test at the beginning of your next class on what we’ve learned, so study and review your little heart out, call your fellow students, your instructors, or Ben Krentz if you need any help. Everyone wants you to succeed, including yourself, so speak up with any questions you may have. This is going to be a wonderful step for your life, with so much potential to grow within the field of dentistry. Keep focused and have fun!
Carla Jordan / May / S. But i am happy that i will hopefully get a job here soon. All my classes were fun especially when we did impressions and when we did prophys! This last Sunday we were able to bring in a patient. I brought in my sister. I took x-rays, impressions, did a prophy, and bleach trays for her. It was so much fun to get the chance to show off my new skills! I hope that the next class gets to have the same teachers as i had, they were so much fun. They were easy to talk to and felt more as a friend then a teacher. I feel like i learned so much from this course and i am glad that i decided to take it!

                                                          Adrienne Brewer

Become a Dental Assistant Today!

Attend the Colorado School of Dental Assisting, and become a dental assistant today! The dental assisting field is fun, fulfilling, challenging and in need of qualified personnel. The Colorado School of Dental Assisting is the standard for dental assistant training in Colorado, offering locations from the Front Range to the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains.

Dental offices all over the United States are experiencing a shortage of competent assistants and front office personnel.
